Deephams Sewage Treatment Works

Due to various upgrades on-site over a number of years, several locations within the site became redundant. Old settlement tanks had been removed, leaving poor ground within their footprint. These included four large settlement lagoons of approximately 7,500m3 in volume each. The client was contractually required to decommission these areas and raise them back to ground level.

The project was commissioned by AMK, an AECOM, Murphy & Kier joint ventures. Initially, Booth Ventures were tasked with supplying 60,000 tonnes of aggregates to restore the lagoons at great expense to the client.

At our suggestion, the customer agreed to substitute the requested aggregates for imported other suitable materials to raise level back to ground. It was demonstrated that these would meet the specifications and client objectives. The biggest challenge was that the project had to be completed within only 8-weeks which did not allow much time to source and import suitable materials.

Booth Ventures used the CL:AIRE DoW CoP scheme to facilitate the importation using materials identified by us in the local market. This included instructing impartial verification by external consultants to ensure compliance. Once importation was completed the newly restored areas were shaped and seeded to improve the area’s visual appeal.

Our aim is always to improve sustainability, which is why we suggested recovering suitable materials from donor sites within the local areas. This material would have been directed to landfill sites, however, we re-purposed the material to restore the tank footprint and lessen the amount of material entering landfill.

The newly restored ground at Deephams Sewage Treatment Works is now safe and will provide suitable foundations for future structures on site.

We completed the job within AMK’s agreed 8-week period, helping them meet their time constraints, and the cost-saving to the client from substituting graded aggregates was substantial.
