As part of the construction of the Mersey Gateway project, it was necessary for both the north and south sides of the estuary span to be engineered and stanchions erected. This required the placement of 250,000 tonnes of aggregates to create access for the construction equipment and protection of the local European Level salt marshes during the build phase.
Upon completion of the works all placed materials and infrastructure had to be removed to allow the remediation of the marshes, under a scheme managed by the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust.
After winning a competitive tender to complete the project, work commenced on site in 2018 in conjunction with the main joint venture partner Kier Construction.
Booth Ventures were tasked with the recovery and recycling of the aggregates, recovery of construction materials, and reinstatement of the salt marshes. Our ability to sell to the whole of the market put us in a unique position to complete the task within a very challenging timescale. As part of the works, drainage channels, habitat pathways, flood defence, and other infrastructure was also installed.
Since the completion of the project, the environmental impacts on the site have been incredibly positive and biodiversity has begun to increase within the salt marsh
Dr Andrea Drewitt, Biodiversity Manager at Mersey Gateway Environmental trust added ‘we are entering a new phase of the project, i.e. long-term management of the salt marsh by the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust. We can already see changes shortly after the removal of the material – early colonisers are starting to emerge on the salt marsh and we are expecting a fully established salt marsh vegetation in the next years. The installed ponds add important features to the marsh, contributing to the diversity of species attracted to the salt marsh, in particular estuarine birds. We are looking forward to witnessing how nature moves back into a space that was a construction site for over 4 years.
